Floorball Powerplay: How to Score More With the Extra Player
By Oscar Lundin
The powerplay is one of the moments in floorball where a team can decide a match. Yet many teams simply pass the ball around the outside and hope for a shot. With a clear structure, the extra player becomes a real advantage.
Choose a formation
Common powerplay setups use a box shape or an umbrella shape with players around the offensive area and one player close to the goal. The formation matters less than every player knowing where to stand and where the ball should go next.
Player roles
- Shooters: players with a strong one-timer in the shooting spots
- Playmaker: the player who controls the tempo and finds the open player
- Net-front player: screens the goalkeeper and finishes rebounds
Move the ball quickly
Four defenders cannot cover five attackers if the ball moves faster than they can shift. Quick passes, especially across the court, force the box play to open up and create shooting lanes.
Avoid holding the ball too long — every second gives the defense time to get back into shape.
Create shots from the slot
The best chances come from the area in front of the goal. Aim to combine a pass to the shooter with a screen in front of the goalkeeper, and have a player ready for the rebound.
